Vertical Search Engines

I always was under assumption that google is the end of search engine and there isn't any need for another search engine. Well, I was wrong. As a matter of fact, google's motto was to organize web to give the users relevant websites for their need. As users are getting more matured online, now its time for the vertical search engines to organize data of a specific domain to find the exact product rather than wandering around all the websites which google lists.

For say, typically, airlines industry went from offline agent booking, to online tickets booking, to online agents like www.orbitz.com, www.cheaptickets.com and had finally landed up on websites like www.kayak.com. Kayak is a search engine for airlines. It gather information from most of the airlines and displays in an organized fashion. User previously had to go to each website of particular airlines to get the pricing/availability to do his comparison, which later was automated by websites like www.orbitz.com by a comparison method. Later, now user had to still compare orbitz and the particular airlines as there is a additional charge in orbitz. kayak has now automated this user action giving him results from both airlines and sites like orbitz. Not to forget www.sidestep.com is another vertical search engine.

The same theory can be applied to indian airlines industry, like www.makemytrip.com, www.yatra.com and then the followon version of kayak are www.ixigo.com ww.bookingbuddy.in.

Similar to the airlines another domain which has similar transformation is Jobs and Staffing. www.indeed.com is a Job Search Engine integrated information of Jobs openings by crawling through the web. Few other websites on similar lines are www.simplyhired.com

I am excited to see how Google will now handle this situation of loosing a huge user base. No doubt in next 1 year every domain will have a specific search engine.

Hi Praneeth,

Good post on vertical search. These days focus is shifting towards vertical search (Google will still rule the generic search). Because people need domain specific information which are hidden in various pages out there on the web.
I just want to add here that we have also developed a travel search portal for India(vertical search for travel industry) , www.90di.com, which combines train and flight mode of travel.
Apart from showing the direct trains and flights, it gives routes containing Train+Flights (E.g: Delhi to Mysore).
Also you can type your search query in simple english like: Delhi to Mumbai tomorrow

Kiran, I agree with you that niche search engines are becoming more and more prominent. Another good transport search engine, but more for those in the biz, is www.searchsupplychainlogistics.net. It allows you to search through websites only relevant to the supply chain and logistics industry.

Thanks Kiran & Michelle.

Kiran, you got a pretty good website laid out there. Are you crawling the target websites or did you partner with the travel websites to share their database?

Also I liked the AJAX you have used. Keep it going and watch out for the bigd's like ixigo.I would suggest you optimize the UI with better CSS and color combinations.
Everything else looks great.

Did you already form a team? or just 3 of you?

Thanks Praneeth for your appreciation and encouragement.

We are only three guys behind this.

The API concept is still in its early stages, so the common practice today is to crawl the pages and get the data (We also do the same). But will definitely should move towards the APIs.

Thats great!

I have couple of question on the crawling and was more curious how a vertical search engine like yours is executing it.

Can you please ping me at praneeth.patlola@gmail.com when you are free to discuss. I will make sure to keep the discussion short.
